REDI Update- Why the REDI Task Force is necessary

Three years ago, our Police Chief initiated a series of Community Conversations on Race to bring our police department, city officials, representatives from the schools, community members, and local businesses together for ongoing discussions to learn and share experiences on how issues of race play out in our community. The goal was to generate ways for our community to face race-related challenges. One outcome of those discussions was the creation of the REDI Task Force. REDI stands for race, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The REDI Task Force is made up of a dedicated group of diverse residents who have volunteered to be community leaders and help us dismantle racism and build a stronger community. Since October, the REDI Task Force has met monthly to lay the foundation for the race equity action plan that will guide our ongoing race equity work. This work is not easy, and there is an urgency to move as quickly as possible to action.

To be successful, this work must be collaborative and community-wide. So, the task force is building and expanding relationships with community partners like the school districts, neighboring communities, and local organizations to work together to create awareness and educate the community on this work. The task force is also meeting and learning from other cities that have successfully moved their race equity work forward. And they are planning opportunities for residents to review and add input on the plan. We remain committed to being a leader in race equity and inclusion to create a community where all residents feel welcome, safe, and connected.
